RaWireless Automator (GPL) for USBWirelessUtility 1.7.1.0

Thanks for the tool and the great description. But at least in my case it does not do the job (with Ralink's USB wireless utility 1.7.1.0). The problem that it is switching "Radio on" and quits the app, but apparently the utility needs to stay on for another 10sec or so to find & connect to the right network. After it has found the network, it can be switched off, but the script forces it to do so too quickly. It would work if the Script would wait for "Connected <-->" to appear in the Site Survey tab.

Also, I am not certain whether version 1.7.1.0 indeed needs the "Radio off" trick..it seems to reconnect alright as long as it is running. The only problem is that it is eating 5% processor time on my old 1.33GHz Mac, thus it would still be favorable to only launch it shortly after sleep.

Would you verify whether your USB wifi device needs to have the Ralink's USB wireless utility 1.7.1.0 running to s.tay connected? I may be able to write a different utility for your setup.

The Ralink device does not reconnect after sleep/reboot when the USB wireless utility is not running, but after it connected (i.e. green icon in the profile tab) one can shut the utility off. If it is shut down before that, the device shall not connect (a Belkin FSD8053 N in this case, but it should behave the same as other Ralink devices). Simply switching the utility on and waiting shall work, one does not need e.g. to switch "radio on/off". I am certain that many people shall find your utility useful when you adapt it to this utility.

Thanks for the information. When I have time, hopefully by next week, I will write an utility that works with your version of Ralink's USB wireless utility 1.7.1.0. When I'm done, I will post it on this site so that you can try it.

Ok. I have made a version of the RaWireless Automator that should work with your version of the Ralink utility. It's attached below.

Currently, it loads up the utility, clicks on the "Radio Off" button, then the "Radio On" button. Next, it waits 10 seconds for it to get connected. And finally it quits. Let me know if this version works for you.

I haven't figured out to get it to determine that it has connected. When I do I'll post a new version here.

Following the instruction provided in the "Automate the Ralink Wireless Connection on Mac OS X" article to set this utility up.

Thank you very much, this works so far! The 10 sec were a bit on the short side though, I changed the first two lines accordingly to

set appName to "USBWirelessUtility"
set waitTime to 30

and I erased the lines

click radio button "Advanced" of tab group 1 of window "Wireless Utility"
click button "Radio Off" of tab group 1 of window "Wireless Utility"
click button "Radio On" of tab group 1 of window "Wireless Utility"

It appears to work great. The waiting time is not the most elegant solution, but AppleScript is certainly limited in its influence on other applications.

Thanks for letting us know how to get it to work with the USBWirelessUtility 1.7.1.0. I have made the same changes as the ones you recommended. The new version of this utility is attached below.

Is there an Intel version of this RaWireless Automator script?

This is an AppleScript written on a Intel PC. Therefore, it should already work on your Intel computer.
