TokenPerLine.sh (GPL)

TokenPerLine.sh extract the nth position token from each line of standard input. The token is separated by spaces. You can use the Tokenize.sh companion script that is also available on this web site to help your convert other delimiters to spaces. You can pipe any line text into TokenPerLine.sh, with a command-line argument of the token position to extract.

TokenPerLine.sh is distributed as executable source code under the GNU General Public License. Please see the license agreement elsewhere on this site.

Usage

  TokenPerLine.sh number

Example

The following returns the third column from a space separated database.

  cat "TextBasedDataBase.txt" | TokenPerLine.sh 3

The following returns the fifth column from a comma separated database, assuming there are no spaces anywhere else in the file.

  cat "CSV_File.txt" | Tokenize.sh "," | TokenPerLine.sh 5

TokenPerLine.sh takes advantage of the Token.sh (GPL) Bourne shell script, which is also available on this web site. So to use this script, you will need to download the Token.sh script if you don't already have it.
