TimeOutNotify.sh (GPL)

TimeOutNotify.sh is a background process that notifies you when a time out is about to occur. I decided to write this script when one of the WebHostingBuzz shared servers keeps logging me out of the shell account after 30 minutes. Even though the system does save my file, if I'm in the middle of an edit, I'd preferred to be prepared for a spontaneous log out. So this script has been written to notify me after 25 minutes that my session is about to expire. You can, of course, use this script to measure other time outs.

You can call this script and put it in the background by putting the following line in your ".bashrc" (if you are using BASH):

TimeOutNotify.sh &

In case you want to do a manual log out before the time is up, you'll want to add the following line to ".bash_logout". (KillProc.sh is a GPL shell script that you can download from this site as well.)

KillProc.sh sleep

Currently, the script is set up for a time out at 30 minutes. It notifies you 5 minutes before the time out. You can change both of these variables at the beginning of the script.

When you install TimeOutNotify.sh in your startup script, you should check to see if it is an interactive shell or not. It should only be install in an interactive shell login session. See "rsync errors" for more details on why and how to do that.
