jwhois trace dumps when configuration can't be found

Have you ever gotten an invalid pointer message from jwhois?

I have. I have just compiled jwhois, a free GNU WHOIS command-line client. As soon as I run it with a query, I got the following error message with full trace dump:

*** glibc detected *** jwhois: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0xbf88a083 ***

At first, I had thought that maybe I compiled it incorrectly and linked it to the wrong library. But it took me a while to figure out that it dumped core because it couldn't find the configuration file, which defaults to "/usr/local/etc/jwhois.conf". Surprising that the developer didn't check for the non-existence of the configuration file and output a friendly error message.

Nevertheless, specifying the configuration file on the command-line finally did the trick.
