MagicMenu 3.0

hi, I tried this application that looks very promosing!
The finder menu hiding works great, but I have some problems with the magicmenu on apps,
When I drag applications on the magicmenu dock icon nothing changed. I first tried with a group of apps, then only with safari 4.0.3 and nothing happened.
The last modification time of the application remains he same.
Am I missing something?
I'm using Tiger 10.4.11

Nevermind, I completely misunderstood the usage of your app.
I tried to drag applications to n already opened "MagicMenu ON" on my dock.
Maybe it's only me, but I think you should clarify this in the usage, or even change the behaviour of your app to easily drop applications on the dock icon.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Chieh, I was able to use MagicMenu. The menu was autohiding itself as soon as I opened up safari.
However yesterday I performed an update and since then it has stopped working.
Even after dragging safari on to it, the menu does not disappear.
Will I have to remove it install again?

Which version of Safari did you upgrade to? Did you quit Safari before dragging it onto MagicMenu? If not, you may have to restart it. I suggest quitting Safari first, drag it onto MagicMenu, and then start it up.

Hi,
Thank you very much for creating and sharing this app ( that I discovered today :( )
I was using another (PYA) app to hide the menu bar when launching VMWare Fusion, but it only works with Cocoa apps and the new version of VMWare is no longer Cocoa.
Will this app work with Carbon based or any other type of app?
Also,
Will this wonder work in Snow Leopard?
I'm trying (in 10.6.1) to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong?

I think it'll work with any app that follows the Mac OS X rules.

Unfortunately, I don't have Snow Leopard, so I don't know if it will work with Snow Leopard.

I just wanted to add a comment, that MagicMenu does a good job in my os x 10.4.11 on ppc. Initially, nothing worked, because I had Menufela installed (but deactivated) and hiding apps wouldn't work until I uninstalled Menufela (which I wanted to get rid of anyway). So thanks for MagicMenu, as Apple is hiding a really good feature. MagicMenu is even working better than Menufela, I didn't see any glitches so far.

I am sorry to say, that my first (good) impressions didn't last for a long time. There is some kind of strange behaviour going on. The menu hiding still works for apps, that I "told" to do that with the scripts, but now in most cases, when I go up with the cursor to show the menu, the finder menu is showing up instead of the menu of the frontmost app. sometimes I get the right menu bar, when I go up and down with the cursor at the top, but often, I have no access to the according menu bar. E.g. the safari (3.2.3) menu shows up about every second time when it should show up and the mail menu (2.1.3) is hiding consequently, also does the preview menu (3.0.9). This only seems to happen, when Finder MagicMenu is On (I hope that the Off mode does not freak out at me, as I write that now :)
There are also problems with an app called Mega Zoom (actually it is a SIMBL plugin, that adds a menu option for apps - a kind of a hack AFAIK), which helps to zoom out apps a bit (something between normal and full screen mode). When I use that with preview, the menu bar won't hide automatically, when turning off Mega Zoom again. But after a restart of preview the menu bar hides again...

I don't think, that MagicMenu is the one to blame, because it just sets a harmless (?) Info.plist setting (Presentation mode, as far as I can see). Maybe these problems wouldn't exist without having Mega Zoom installed, or Apple just doesn't give the option to hide the menu, because there are some complicated problems associated with it... whatever, this is just a feedback for other users of MagicMenu and maybe somebody finds a solution somewhen...

Hello. your app has worked great on both the finder and photobooth, the first 2 I tried, however, when I try any other app, such as safari, I get a message saying,

"File alias Macintosh
HD:Users:Desktop:MagicMenu
Library.app of <<script>> wasn't found."

what should I do?

It's probably because you place your favorite MagicMenu utility on your desktop, but not the rest. There are seven utilities in the MagicMenu package. They must all be in the same folder. Basically, that message is saying "MagicMenu Library.app" is missing. This library needs to be in the same location as the MagicMenu utility you used.

I don't think you are talking about the same MagicMenu that this web site is talking about. The MagicMenu 3.0 talked about here does not show up in the System Preferences.

Panel? What are you talking about? MagicMenu makes your top menu bar disappear (auto-hide). It doesn't remove anything from any panel.

lopexo, I don't know what you are talking about. Because the MagicMenu being talked about here does not show up in the System Preferences in the first place.

Chieh Cheng i don`t now what drugs you been taking, but MagicMouse IS IN the System Preference..and i have the same problem, i delete that stupid app from my mac, but every time i restart it came back again..

this works fine for most apps - but it wont work for adobe air apps - have you any idea how to get this working for them? I can send you a sample dummy air app to try it on if you like. I've tried a few - and even edited the file manually using the property list editor (which works fine for other apps too)

when using magicmenu on macbook pro, it tells me I need to install "Rosetta"..? Is this correct? I am also running snow Leopard.

To keep the Dock visible:
Apple Menu -> Dock -> Turn Hiding Off

The poster "Mikey" (July 31, 2010) is correct–those of us using 10.6 without Rosetta installed can't use these droplets. Either you have, or the systems think you have, saved them as PPC AppleScript apps. I suspect that they simply need to be recompiled from an Intel-based system.

DaveD, I don't see how that's possible, as MagicMenu is compiled on Intel Mac. We do not have any PPC Mac's. Perhaps, if you show us an error message screen shot, we can figure it out.

I downloaded MagicMenu, I want to get rid of the program. But every time I put it in the trash and clear it and restart, it still makes the top menu hide. Someone please help me uninstall this!

You have to disable MagicMenu prior to uninstalling it. Re-install MagicMenu, disable it in all the program instances, where you enabled it. Then uninstall it.

I just downloaded Magic Menu, opened the folder which was located in the Downloads folder. I tried opening any of the scripts but they come up with the same error message.

Only three of those files are to be opened by double-clicking (the ones that starts with Finder). The other three are to be opened by drag-and-dropping applications onto them. The library is not meant to be opened any other way.

Can you be more specific on how you are trying to open each one? Did you make a folder for all these files?

I meant no matter which script I open, that error still pops up. I tried just opening the ones with Finder on it and I got it again. I also tried dragging an application (Safari) onto MagicMenu On and it STILL pops up.

That's very strange. I have never seen that problem before. I'm not sure what's causing it, Joshua. Other users have tried MagicMenu 3.0 with Mac OS X 10.6.2 and mentioned that it works. Right now, I'm clueless to why it is failing on your system.

I couldn't help myself and went ahead and installed a pre-release version of Lion. MagicMenu no longer works because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. Despite Lion's foray into fullscreen modes for applications, I miss the clean interface I had when running in window mode.

Too make a long story short; what can be done?

I am having a problem with my bittorrent client, Transmission 2.22 (12099). I added it to the magicmenu list, which works no problem but now Transimission is no longer properly communicating with torrent sites. They seem to think I am downloading multiples of the same torrent and do not know when I stop seeding. Have you heard of this before?

I don't understand what you mean by "I added it to the magicmenu list". There is no MagicMenu list. I suspect you may be talking about a different MagicMenu than the one being discussed here.

I mean I dropped the application icon onto the script, as per instructions. Also, I discovered that the problem was not related to magicmenu. One other question I have is; is there a way for me to see a list of apps that I have activated the magicmenu script for? When I first got magicmenu I dropped a ton of apps onto the script but now I can't remember which ones I did and which ones I didn't. Can I see without having to test every single one?

Ok. I get it. The misunderstanding is that there is no MagicMenu list. When you drop an application onto MagicMenu, MagicMenu changes the setting in the application itself.

At this time, there is no way to pull up a list of apps that is set one way or another. However, being able to see a list of apps and their states seems like a good idea. I'll add it to the list of enhancements.

No, it is not compatible with OS X Lion -- see earlier screenshot. MagicMenu is (or Lion thinks it is) PPC code and all PPC code has been deprecated as of Lion.

Everything works as it's supposed to with one issue. I have the app, Sleepless, and it won't work if MagicMenu is active.

One glitch I noticed; if you use the 'quickview' (spacebar) built into mac osx 10.6 and turn on full screen it deactivates the finderMenuMagic. you have to logoff or restart and its activated again. maybe you guys can fix this in an update?!? Thanks so much - great plug-in!!!

At this time, we do not have any computers with the Mac OS X Lion operating system. Therefore, we have no plans to test or upgrade this software for Lion.

Have installed MagicMenu in my Utilities Folder. Clicking any of the scripts merely asks for my password. Then nothing happens. Yes, I rebooted after installation.

What am I doing wrong/not doing?

Running G5 iMac with Leopard 10.5.8.

It may be working. Asking your password is normal operation. It needs permission to change system settings. Did you provide the correct password?

Read the MagicMenu download page, under the "Bundled Utilities" section, for instruction on how to use each of the utilities. The three utilities associated to Finder can be activated by double-clicking. The other three utilities will only work if you drag-and-drop application(s) onto them.

Let me know if this solves your problem. If not, let's go through an exercise with one of the utilities. Pick one and give you step-by-step detail on how you used it.

I'm having the same problem as Klaus1. I'm running OS 10.6.8 on a MacBook Air. I'm using the right password (I'm certain it's the right one, and the system does not give me any error message saying it is the wrong password), and dragging apps onto 'MagicMenu On' or clicking 'Finder MagicMenu On'. It just has no effect - the menu bar still remains for those apps.

People, unfortunately MagicMenu isn't supported by Lion yet, but you can still hide the top menubar doing manually what MagicMenu did automatically for you.

Hey just wanted to say this is awesome! I really like the extra screenspace and minimalist style I have now. Something I just noticed is when using Chrome, if I switch to full-screen mode and then back to regular mode, the menu bar is stuck again. I guess it makes sense though, as Chrome's full-screen mode is messing with the menu bar. Thanks!

Hi!

osx 10.6.8 and Finder did work but can't run MagicMenu Toggle.app where I draged MagicMenu On.app and I get an error:"Its info.plist can't be found" I tryed download it several places but no luck... :/

(it also said:"its mac os x application...")

hey.. magicmenu works well on all my apps.. however i d like to report a bug. when i open safari app it opens with the default window size. i have to resize it manually. new tabs in the already open safari app opens like how its supposed to. it wud b nice if u include an instructions document in the zip file. i think this app is wonderful and apple should integrate it into their os. i have some amazing wallpapers and thanks to this app i can use them without the finder menu sticking out and reminding us where we r. thank u chieh for this amazing app.

Just installed Mountain Lion and to my dismay Magic Menu is incompatible

I think this application is great, yet, I tried to install it (MAC OSX 10.8) and it says that powerpc files are no longer accepted.
Are you planning to make a newer version?

Hi! I am on Mavericks and would love to be able to hide/disable the menus for specific apps with MagicMenu 3.0.

But like others have reported, I'm getting the "You can't open the application "MagicMenu ..." because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." message!!! (https://i.imgur.com/uY8QDDa.png) I also can't access 'Show Package Contents' on any of your .app files like I can pretty much every other application on my Mac; I wonder if you could possibly update MagicMenu to work on Mavericks for us all? :)
