Toggle Mirror Displays (GPL)

I got myself into a bind recently when I plugged a second display into my Mac laptop and then clicked on "Mirror Displays". Both displays ended up garbled with vertical lines that run up and down. Without mirroring, the two displays work just fine. And the laptop display works fine if I disconnect the external monitor. So I lived without an external monitor for a few days.

Finally, I was tired of the single display on the notebook computer and decided to fix the problem with an AppleScript. The resulting AppleScript worked beautifully and brought my two displays back under control.

I have attached it below, in case you get into the same situation. Before you run it, you need to turn on "Enable access for assistive devices". You can turn this feature on in "System Preferences" -> "Universal Access".

Once you have that feature enabled, load up the "Toggle Mirror Displays.scpt" in script editor. You can do that by double-clicking on the script. Next, plug in your second display. Wait till your displays are garbled. Then hit Command-R to run the script (without being able see anything sensible). After a few seconds, the script should have turned off the mirror displays function and both of your displays should return to normal.
