Highlight FatWallet New Topics

I have been a big fan of FatWallet. Whenever I need to spend money, I go to FatWallet's Hot Deals forum to see if I can get the best deal for whatever I need to spend money on. There are always tons of people and tons of new messages there. And that's a good thing, because you need the word of mouth to communicate great deals.

But the problem with lot of people and lots of mouths is that the amount of new messages becomes overwhelming. There are threads that are still alive after 137 days! By then the deals are long dead, but only the dwellers read the thread. To find hot current deals, you'll have to look for the "New Topic" designation. This designation is small, so it takes quite a bit of time to sort through new hot deals and old fading threads.

GreaseMonkey comes to the rescue. I have been wanting to learn how to use GreaseMonkey. What better way than to let GreaseMonkey sort through the FatWallet thread index?

Attached is version 1.0 of my first script. It simply identify all of the "New Topic" threads and increases the "New Topic" font size by 2 and changes its color to red. It makes the "New Topic" threads a lot easier to identify. This script could use some improvement, such as highlighting the entire row, etc. But that's it for now.

It's released under GPL, so you are welcome to download it and make any improvement modifications to it. All I ask is that you upload your modification with a description to share with others.

It seems that FatWallet changed its web page layout slightly, so the original script no longer worked.

Here is version 2.0. Now the script is working again.

While I'm at updating this script, I decided to make it work with FatWallet search results as well. So here is version 2.5 of the script.

I found that the developers at FatWallet has made another layout change to the forum and the search function. They've also added some hidden spaces for me to pull my hair out. But I've finally figured it out. Here is version 2.7 of the script.

Well, just a few days after I patched this script to version 2.8, FatWallet made a quick change again! Such a minor change and it broke the script. So I decided that this script needed an over-haul. It's time for 3.0. And it needs to work even if FatWallet makes minor changes. Version 3.0 is attached.

This version breaks FatWallet's "Title Search" functionality. The work-around, for now, is to disable Greasemonkey (clicking on the happy monkey face on the lower right-hand corner of Firefox), do the search, and then re-enabling Greasemonkey (clicking on the frown monkey face).

Title: Reduce YMMV on FatWallet
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: I have been using my "Highlight FatWallet New Topics" Greasemonkey script (see Greasemonkey forum) on Firefox with FatWallet all the time. It works out really well and saves me a lot of time glancing for the latest deals. I decided that I also wanted a Greasemonkey to get rid of YMMV deals. Most of . . .
