App Inventor for Android First Impression

I was extremely excited when I received an e-mail mentioning that I now have access to App Inventor for Android. I immediately logged into my App Inventor account to try it out. Here are what I learned about it, pass the initial about description.

1. App Inventor is an online Android programming tool. You create your Android app online in the web browser.

2. Currently, App Inventor does not let you change the launch icon of your Android app. However, there is a hack to repackage your own launch icon for 48x48 size only.

3. App Inventor does not generate Java code, therefore, you can't develop in App Inventor, then enhance your app later on outside of App Inventor.

4. There is not as many palette entities as the App Inventor web site seems to express. If the App Inventor had used Java code, then they could have made everything more from its Java API available. However, it looks like they are writing all component from scratch.

5. The viewer is for laying out the display. The block editor is for programming the logic.

6. You can download the code for your app, but it's not in Java.

7. The app you create using App Inventor cannot be uploaded to Google Market. If you try, you will get this error message: "The icon path specified by the manifest is not in the apk."

8. Not sure what's faster: 1) assemble logic in block editor; 2) write everything in Java.

Have you tried App Inventor yet? If so, let us know your impression.

9. The App Inventor generated Android package average slightly over 1 megabytes in size. The apps I wrote in Java, outside App Inventor, averages less than 100K.

10. You can't change the menu in the app.

11. The menu has a "Stop this application" option. When you select it, it asks you, "Stop this application and exit? You'll need to relaunch the application to use it again." Then you can click on "Stop and exit" or "Don't stop".
