MarkOriginal (Freeware)

MarkOriginal is a command-line Java software that will append the string " - original" to your files and set them to read-only. Thus, MarkOriginal is capable of marking your image files as the original shots. MarkOriginal is most useful when you first download your JPEG/TIFF files from your digital camera. Mark them immediately upon transferring to your computer to prevent the accident overwriting.

This software understands standard file specification masks, so you can execute it on a number of files at once. Because MarkOriginal is written as a command-line utility, it can be used in custom batch files and custom scripts.

MarkOriginal is written in Java, so it will run on any Java-supported operating system. MarkOriginal takes advantage of the CI Class Package 5.4 or newer. You will have to download the package and install it if you don't have it already.

MarkOriginal is distributed as Freeware. Please see the "Freeware License Agreement" elsewhere on this site.

Usage

java MarkOriginal [ -v ] "file 1" [ . . . "file n" ]

-v Verbose. Can be specified anywhere on the command-line.
However, only files matching the file specs after this
option will be verbose.

Example

102MSDCF>java MarkOriginal -v *.JPG
"\102MSDCF\DSC00047.JPG" -> "\102MSDCF\DSC00047 - original.JPG" [read-only]
"\102MSDCF\DSC00048.JPG" -> "\102MSDCF\DSC00048 - original.JPG" [read-only]
"\102MSDCF\DSC00049.JPG" -> "\102MSDCF\DSC00049 - original.JPG" [read-only]

I've made a slight bug fix so that MarkOriginal reports an error when the file specification does not match any files. The new version 1.01 is attached below.

I have made two improvements to MarkOriginal 1.1 (attached below). This new version will now check to see if a file has already been marked with " - original.". If so, it will not mark it again. Also, MarkOriginal now checks that the file you specified is actually a file and won't mark it if it is not. Therefore, it will now avoid marking your directories.
