What's the Download Installer For?

I read through the App Inventor for Android set-up instructions. Then I installed what it asked me to in order to use App Inventor. But on a different computer, I logged into the App Inventor using the web browser and was immediately able to program my app. This computer doesn't have the App Inventor installation. Considering that the App Inventor is an online programming tool (cloud computing), I wonder what the installation is for. It doesn't seem like you have to install anything to take advantage of App Inventor.
