Upload App Inventor Apps to Google Market

It sucks you can't upload your created apps. i created on and now I can't upload it...is there a way to transfer it to sdk to make it upload (based on how you said you can't i am guessing not). I uploaded my app but changed the .apk extention to .zip

Attached File: AddressLocator-14.zip (1 MB)

Yeah. It seems like currently, you can't upload App Inventor apps to Google Market. When you try to upload it, it gives you this error message:

"The icon path specified by the manifest is not in the apk."

And there is no way to specify new icons for the App Inventor apps.

I've tried to download the source code for App Inventor apps, but they are also not the same as the standard Java SDK apps.

Someone posted a work-around to publish App Inventor apps on Google Market here:

[How To] Publish the app created with App Inventor in the Android Market

I'm going to try it when I get a chance.

Assembling all the necessary tools can cause a head-ache. Below, I'm listing the links to each of the tools while I attempt to follow the work-around steps:

Well, that work-around page, linked above, disappeared. But I managed to find a similar page in Italian. A BabelFish English translation of that page is here: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&in . . .

I did follow the original instruction to create an App Inventor app for Google Market. I uploaded it to the Google Market successfuly. However, when I tried to install it, it said "Package file was not signed correctly". Not sure what went wrong. I'll have to try again.

Ok. The app only fails to install on Android 1.6. But it installs just fine on Android 2.1. I'm not sure what's the difference yet. So I changed the minSdkVersion to 7 for now. I uploaded my first app to Google Market and it's already on a number of phones. You can give it a try; the app is called "Meow (Free)".

By the way, I found the Auto-Sign step completely unnecessary (or maybe that's cause of the Android 1.6 sigature problem).

Here is basically the step that is needed to create a package for Google Market.

  1. Decompile the package produced by App Inventor.
  2. Modify the package with correct 'AndroidManifest.xml' and 'ya.png' (icon).
  3. Recompile the package.
  4. Sign the package.
  5. Optimize the package.

I found that the package fails to install to Android 2.2 as well with the "Installation error: Package file was not signed correctly." error message when you try to install it from Google Market. If you try to install it from the SD Card, you'll get the "Application not installed" error message.

Not sure how Android 2.1 differs from Android 1.6 and Android 2.2 in this area.

Strange revelation . . . I decided to take a break from banging my head against the wall with this signature problem. So I developed a second app in App Inventor. It's similar to the first app, with some added feature. Then I went through the same process to get it ready for the Market. Next, I tried it on Android 1.6, 2.1, and 2.2. Surprisingly, it worked on all three platforms. I also uploaded it to Google Market and it worked as well.

Hey, Chieh Cheng, I went to the Android Market but was unable to find your app. I searched in the Android Market and in the AppBrain application. I tried MEOW (FREE) and MEOW and CHIEH and CHIEH CHENG. Can you please let me know where to find it in the Market.

Thanks.

Because of the problem mentioned in this thread, Meow set with min and max SDK level for Android 2.1. You will only see if if you have an Android 2.1 device. What version is your Android?

The second app I created is called, "Three Little Pigs". It's an audiobook. And I have tested it to work on Android 1.6, 2.1, and 2.2. You can try looking for this app on Market.

I figured it out. The problem mentioned in this thread only occurs if you have installed the "unprocessed" APK to your phone. And then tried to installed and replace it with a "processed" APK. The Package Installer won't let you do it. Once you have uninstalled the "unprocessed" APK, you can then install the "processed" APK.

"Unprocessed" APK is a APK that hasn't been processed for distribution on Google Market. "Processed" APK is a APK that has been processed for distribution on Google Market.

I created a text file which simplifies the process of uploading google app inventor apps to the marketplace, it's in 10 steps, and made for anyone to understand. It worked for me, and I made this so you just download the file for easy repeat use.
