Android 4.0 Emulator Needs 4 GB of RAM

We tried to run the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) emulator on a bone stock Acer Aspire AO722-BZ454 netbook. We had a hell of a time. It usually just hangs on boot. Once, we got it to boot completely, but the virtual machine just hangs when we try to use it. It didn't occur to us that more memory could help.

The Acer Aspire AO722-BZ454 comes with 2 GB of memory. It's more than enough to run Android 2.3.3, so we figured it'd be enough for Android 4.0. We have been wrong.

After replacing the 2 GB RAM stick inside the Acer Aspire AO722-BZ454 with a Corsair 4 GB memory stick (1333 MHz DDR3), we found that Android 4.0 runs great on it.

Also had to set the Android Virtual Device (AVD) with these settings in order to have it boot properly every time:

Max VM application heap size: 256
Device ram size: 1024

I want to set device RAM size to 2048, but looks like 4GB of RAM in the netbook is not enough. Probably need 8GB of RAM.

You can try bigger RAM numbers. The emulator will probably run better. But if your number is too big, then the emulator will give you the following error message when you run it on the command-line:

"Failed to allocate memory: 8
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

With 4 GB of memory on our netbook, we could only specify 1024. Any larger number causes the error message above and causes the emulator to abort.
