Android 1.6: "Application not installed"

Today, I encountered this error on Android 1.6. The error dialog shows the following:

"Application not installed

[app name] could not be installed on this phone."

I was trying to install an app that my friend wrote from the microSD Card. After examining the AndroidManifest.xml file, I found its minSdkVersion is set to "5". That would only allow it to be installed on Android 2.0 or later. After my friend recompiled the app for Android 1.6, it installed without any problem.
